Not sure how many of you have ever read the blog kept by David Greiner at Campaign Monitor, but the young man is a very good writer, who is capable of really getting a point across. (With no knock against the folks here at CC.)
His latest article "Why we need standards support in HTML email" really helps to explain why your email campaign does not look the same in email client X versus Y.
In addition, back in April, he wrote a column "A Guide to CSS Support in Email: 2007 Edition" which I highly recommend to anyone who really wants to understand the science.
