WARNING --- BE AWARE - Community pages on facebook [ Edited ]

After spending a few hours working on a clients Social Campaign I discovered that any facebook pages that were created as "community pages" will not allow you to control the default landing page and automatically defaults to the wall.

The CTCT Campaign coach I called was unaware of this as well.

You will still be able to have the Campaigns side tab on the navigation wall but you won't be able to make it the default gate page.

At the current cost of this product we decided not to deploy it.   I wasted 3 hours and ate every penny of it.

This is a warning to others.

In an attempt to salvage some functionality out of the evening I ended up leaving the default landing page up as a tab and renaming it "Win cool stuff".

We've done some testing and some of our staff with Community pages can control their landing page, but not all of them can. We're going to do some more testing to see what we can find. Sorry for the inconvenience.

According to Facebook, Community pages are restricted from having the option to set a default landing page. In our own testing, we have seen this is not always the case. However, once Timeline is enabled all Community pages will lack the ability to control the landing page.

I'm not sure how you ever got any community pages to work.  I have a very good friend that works at FB engineering and he was the one that told me that it wouldn't work.

BTW, you mean to say that "all pages" will lack the control.

This little problem sort of evolved didn't it.

Hey Tony,

This works for Timeline on Fan pages so it should work for Community pages. Try adding

 ?sk=app_237202476309340 to the end of your Community Facebook URL. It should link to your Welcome page. You could also use Simple Share or Simple Send for this.

All the pages will be getting converted to the new Timeline format.

You'll be able to tell your kids you remembered facebook in the old format.

The pre and post facebook timeline Internet.

Another tip that I shared in the thread above was to go into the app tab of your page and look for all the "Link to this Tab" entries.  There you will find the URLs that point to any of the apps you have currently loaded on your page.  You can use that for other things besides the CTCT pages as well.

Does anyone know of any way to convert a "Community Page" into a "Fan Page"?  

A number of people I'm working with made "community pages", not understanding the differances and need a way to convert them to "Fan Pages" or Official Pages".

Any tips?

The simple answer is they can't be converted.  I have a great deal of experience in this. What is it they are trying to accomplish with the change?

The previous big issue was that you could not define a default landing page, now since timeline has been rolled out that's not an issue any longer as the that's been disabled on all pages.
