"I need a ton of hashtags for people to find my posts."

REALITY

People increasingly search inside Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook the same way they search Google - typing real phrases like "gluten free bakery near me" or "beginner pilates tips" - and the platforms serve results based on your actual words, not your hashtags.

This is what's now called Social SEO, and it's genuinely good news for small businesses: it rewards being clear and helpful over being clever. Instead of stuffing 30 hashtags at the bottom, the move is to write captions, headlines, and even on-screen text using the words your customers would actually type into that search bar.

Instead of: "✨ New drop! Obsessed. 🙌 #smallbiz #shoplocal #mood"

Try: "Handmade soy candles in Asheville, NC — new fall scents just launched 🍂"

Same photo, same effort, but the second version actually tells the platform (and your future customer) what you offer and where. Spoken words in videos count too, so saying your key phrase out loud in a Reel helps it surface in search.

You don't have to abandon hashtags entirely. Just stop relying on them as your discovery strategy, and start writing like someone's searching for exactly what you do.
