Exporting Your Unsubscribe List

Occasional Advisor

UPDATED: November 2018

Knowing who has unsubscribed from your emails is an important part of email marketing. This post will take a look at how to export your unsubscribed list from your account.

***An important note to remember is your unsubscribe/do-not-mail requests (also known as opt-outs) never expire. Federal law requires that you honor all opt-out requests indefinitely, even if you switch to a different marketing provider, unless you receive a new explicit opt-in request for that address. ***

Exporting your unsubscribe list:

  1.        Click on “Contacts”, in the top left hand corner.
  2.        You will notice there is a folder called “Unsubscribed” under your “Contacts” heading.  Click on the word “Unsubscribed”. (Any  contact that has unsubscribed or opted-out of your emails will now display to the right.)
  3.        Now, click on the checkbox next to the name of the contact (you can also select the first check box next to where it says “name” to select all contacts in the list), and then you will see an option to “export”becomes available.

    Click Export Contacts.png

  4.        Choose any field of information you wish to export, and click on “Export Contacts”.
    Click Export Contacts.png

  5.        You will get a message letting you know the contacts were exported and will include a link to download the file. (Note: If the list is large, you will be able to track the activity and when it's done, a link to download the file will become available).

Now you have a backup of contacts that have unsubscribed which you can use to update your own database with!

I started with Constant Contact back in October of 2006, have wore many different hats with the company, gaining knowledge in a variety of Constant Contact departments.

Is there a way to get a list of currently unsubscribed people?  For instance, at times we have people who've unsubscribed accidentally so they re-subscribe. They still show up on the Unsubscribed list though so if I were to use this list as a guide to who no longer wishes to receive emails it wouldn't be accurate.

Hi @JayM46,

You can still access currently Unsubscribed contacts directly in the Contacts tab:

Once a contact has re-subscribed with the same email address it is moved to Active again and removed from the Unsubscribed list. If a contact re-subscribes with a new/different email address, the Unsubscribed email address will remain Unsubscribed.

Thank you.  I took a look at it again and saw where the problem was that I was having earlier.  Although I went into the Unsubscribed list as you described here, when I clicked on Export, the only option it gave was to "Export Deleted Unsubscribed".  I exported that list and saw that it had a person who I knew had re-subscribed. I hadn't noticed that it didn't match the Unsubscribed list showing on the screen.  What I did this time was to first Select All of the contacts in the Unsubscribed list, then click Export and it gave me two options, one of which was to "Export Unsubscribed" which now is just the people who are currently unsubscribed.

Hi @JayM46,

We're glad you found what you needed! That is correct, in that when you export, you first select the contacts (by checking the box next to the contact name or by selecting all contacts in the list) and then the Export button. This is with any list, report, etc. Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

I agree with Jay. The "Export Deleted Unsubscribed" button is confusing. What is the definition of "Deleted Unsubscribed" and why is it the default option?

Hello @PaulM21,

I do apologize for any confusion. "Deleted Unsubscribed" refers to any contacts that have unsubscribed and subsequently been deleted from the account. Our system remembers unsubscribed contacts on the back end and they can be retrieved for whatever purpose you might need them for. No matter what email service someone uses, once a recipient has unsubscribed they cannot legally be mailed to again without their permission. Allowing you to export deleted unsubscribed contacts let's you keep a record of those people so if you do move services you will know not to send to them again. It is set as the default option because there is no other indication to retrieve deleted unsubscribed contacts unless you click on "Export." When you select an existing unsubscribed contact then you will be able to choose to export them.

I keep trying to export unsubscribes but get the message "Contact Export Failed" and there is no reason.  How can I get my unsubscribes list exported?

Hello AdrienneR90 and thank you for reaching out on the Community!  I see that you’ve posted your question elsewhere and I just wanted to reach out here to make sure you received an answer. We did run the report of unsubscribes that you can now download from the activity page. Our upper level support is doing some research as to why you were not able to export the unsubscribes and they will contact you with any updates that they find!

I love that you are able to do this efficiently, but what I haven't found is a way to include the reason/feedback. This is not an option for the export. You'd have to go back into each e-mail campaign under reporting, which can be a slow process. Also, what happens if you delete a campaign? Does the unsubscriber feedback just go away?

Hi @AmyD326

These are great questions! I can definitely understand how helpful it would be to include these feedback reasons in your export. I apologize this information is not exporting. This is a feature request I have submitted in your account to the appropriate teams. Viewing these reasons under each individual campaign is the workaround we suggest in the meantime. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause! However the good news is, even if you delete a campaign the reporting and unsubscribe feedback will still be available under the Reporting Tab of your account.
