So, you’re a small retailer and you want to beat the appeal of online shops, huh? Well Gene Marks, contributor to Entrepreneur.com, gives you 8 quick tips to remember when trying to defeat your online competitors.

  1.        Build a community – You’re part of a local community. People like supporting their local shops and small businesses. You have to be active! Advertise locally; get something about your business published in a local newspaper. That will look much better than a giant online retailer.
  2.        Get a customer-relationship-management (CRM) system – It’s a database, a database that you can build. Collect names and emails and communicate with your customers. Send them coupons and remember their birthday, make it personal.
  3.        Go mobile. – Let’s face it, mobile phones are becoming monsters in how customers interact with businesses, if your small business isn’t mobile ready, you might be missing out on potential buyers.
  4.        Educate – You know everything there is to know about your products! Prove it! Hold events at your store, teach them how to use your products, bring in experts. Do things that an online competitor couldn’t possibly do.
