It’s already November 13th, and the holiday season is upon us. Before you know it Thanksgiving will be here, followed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and then there’s #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday was established by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation in 2012 as “a global day dedicated to giving back.” You can even register your organization on the #GivingTuesday website.
If you’re working on your non profit holiday campaigns, but haven’t planned anything for #GivingTuesday, don’t panic! Here are a few ideas to put together a campaign in time for December 1st, 2015.
First, make it specific! Do you need volunteers for an event? Funds? Items? Turn your need into your call to action--what is it you want your reader to do? Do you need 20 volunteers to help build a home, $5,000 to donate to a shelter, or a certain amount of dog food to feed abused pups? Great! Then your reader should know that you need someone to "Volunteer Now," or tell them to "Donate Now." The person viewing your campaign shouldn’t be left wondering how it is that they can help you.
Don't forget to post your #GivingTuesday email campaign to social media. Share your campaign on Twitter using the hashtag #GivingTuesday, this will make it easier to find for all the philanthropic folks out there. If you have a page where you are collecting donations then link to it. You can even make the images in your campaign link to your website or donation page. Make it as easy as possible for donors to find you and contribute. It’ll be easier for someone to click on a link that redirects them exactly where they need to go as opposed to them having to read your email, leave the email, open a new tab, search for your organization, find the proper page, etc. See what I mean? One click instead of 10 different actions will help retain the attention of your prospective donor.
If possible, try and give your audience a teaser, or heads-up, about your upcoming campaign. Send an email out a week in advance reminding them that #GivingTuesday is fast approaching. You don’t want to inundate your prospective donor, but let them know to expect something. This could be a great opportunity to share your story.
