Small business marketing skill sets… you need more than one to survive.
"It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts." Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the US.
When I received my degree in Marketing, there was no future certification process required. Today is no different. However, that did not stop me from learning. I have my own certification process that I abide by each and every day.
In 1984 I became a small business owner. Anyone can start a business. The only certification for being a small business owner is to keep learning ways to stay in business and become successful. And to pay your taxes.
If you enjoy making money and have a vision of customer’s smiling faces, you know what I mean.
Being a small business owner requires a large skill set. Many of these skills start with leadership, even if there is only one person in the business.
Operating a small business is complicated. I learned early on, if I don’t have a skill set to get a need accomplished, I must find a person with that skill set and use them as a paid resource.
The need was even more critical if I required a skill I did not have for a customer project.
A small business can’t be everything to everyone, but can be something to someone, such as prospects and customers. Take a cue from your best customers. Learn about them and what you can do to make their buying experience even more enjoyable.
Now that would make a great certification program in anyone’s business.
The ability to learn is a vital skill set all of us need to succeed. How you develop this skill set is entirely up to you. I do know one thing for sure… once you commit to developing your skill sets, the payoff can be your biggest reward in life.
So take a tip from one of America’s great leaders, Harry Truman. His quote above may make more sense today, especially for us in a small business.
Have a successful and enjoyable 2013.
