Don't wait until two weeks before Small Business Saturday to start thinking about what you'll do. There's really not enough time to put something together properly. So, yes, start NOW. We think that a good campaign for Small Business Saturday would be 6-8 weeks. We are starting our client's campaigns on October 1st. Small Business Saturday is November 29th this year and many times we hear of folks who plan that shopping day almost as though it is a vacation! Make sure that your company is a point of destination for that shopping trip!
Our Tips for a BIG Small Business Saturday:
Decide what you want to accomplish. Is it a new product to focus on? Do you want to recruit new memberships? Offer a specific product? Think about your goals for the day. Maybe you want to increase sales 10% over last year's Small Business Saturday. Your goal will drive your action plan.
Write down your plan. List everything that matters from the tiniest details to the larger picture items. Who will you invite? Who is your target? How will you reach them? Will you host an event? Do you need any giveaway items? What about food or refreshments? Will there be entertainment? Can you partner with any other businesses or organizations? Visit Small Business Saturday website & register as a participant. This will get you added to the shopping map and help American Express promote you as a participant. Find out who your "Neighborhood Champion" is and contact them for help, ideas and/or free materials!
Write a press release announcing your participation, involvement, and plans for the day. Share that with your local media, magazines, online news media, local organizations such as your Chamber of Commerce, tourism office, etc.
Create a Facebook event!Here is one that we've started for one of our friends in business. It is a local coffee shop and they've already started the #ShopSmall chatter to get people motivated to start their day with a pastry and coffee with friends before they hit the shopping. Invite friends, share on your Facebook page, website and more.
Develop your social media strategy. Will you promote your day on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, or some other platform? Know ahead of time and decide what you'll post and when.
Use the #ShopSmall free signage and promotional items available and begin using that no later than October 1st.
