API Connection- Constant Contact Integration with application

I am trying to transfer basic data (name, email address) from my website form to constant contact using an API connection.  The data collected on our website is from visitors seeking to regsiter for a newsletter.  I have double checked the user name, password, and API key to ensure accuracy but the connection between my website application/form and Constanct Contact doesn't seem to be working. 

 

Can you please answer two questions: 

 

1. Which Constant Contact product or service would I need to have active (or purchased) to allow the connection to work? 

 

2. What can be done to correct this problem?

Hi,

 

Sorry to hear about the difficulty.  Contacts will be able to be added to your account no matter which Constant Contact products you have in trial, active, or expired.  Even expired accounts will allow new contacts to be added to the account.  

 

As for question 2, it really depends what is going wrong.  If this is a 3rd party integration to us, the developer of the application should be able to help.  What code are you using, or where did you download the code that should send the contacts into your Constant Contact account?

thank you Shannon.  I am using Joomla as my CMS and RS Joomla as the third party developer. RS Joomla has created a Constant Contact (CC) plugin for integration: http://www.rsjoomla.com/support/documentation/view-article/587-rsformpro-constant-contact.html

 

I suspect the code is within the RS Joomla CC plugin programming. Would you agree?

You're welcome!  I would agree...if you aren't even getting an error message, it would be best to check with the developer to see why it's not working.  The plugin was probably developed before April 2013, and if so, it might require a V1 API Key, which you can get here.  Let us know if you get any error messages that we might be able to shed some light on.

Yes, the application was created before 2013. How do I go about obtaining a V1 API key?

 

Also, I don't receive an error message. My problem is that the contact list created in CC meant to accept the data from the joomla application doesn't appear as an option in the joomla form manager. What I believe this means is that the connectivity between the form/joomla and CC is not active for some reason.  Perhaps I require the V1 Key?

Hi,

 

You can follow the link in my post above (Click on "which you can get here") to get a V1 API Key.  

 

If you can see some of your other lists in the Joomla plugin, this might just be an issue with you having the list set as private within Constant Contact.

 

To set a list as public, meaning your members can select it when adding themselves or updating their email preferences, login to your account and go to:

 

Contacts > Sign-up Tools > Customize my Form > Lists

 

Make sure your Joomla list has a checkmark in the box under "Join My Mailing list."  That ensures that the list can be selected.

Thanks Shannon. Actually, I don't show any lists in the joomla plug in. I have contacted the plug in developer who suggested I reinstall the plug in . I did this and I continue to not show any lists.  Could the V1 API Key be the solution?

It's certainly worth a try.  I would recommend creating and using a V1 API Key for use with the plugin.

Can you please help clarify the type of API Key required.  I used the link provided by you and the plugin developer , http://community.constantcontact.com/t5/Documentation/API-Keys/ba-p/25015, to generate an API Key and consumer secret. Am I correct in that there are only two types of possible API keys, V1 and V2?  The plugin doesn't require me to input a consumer secret, so I'm concluding that the plugin requires a V1 Key.  Would you agree with my interpretation?

 

Also,after generating the API key using the link above, does CC email me an authorization notice to authenticate for the key to work?  I haven't seen such an email so I'm thinking maybe that may be the reason the integration doesn't work.

Hi Mary,

 

For the Joomla integration, it will use a V1 API key, and you only need the key from the generator. However, rather than an authentication email, the Joomla plugin mote likely uses your Constant Contact username and password to authenticate access to your account. Once you have input the API key, there should be another section to either Grant Access or enter your username and password for Constant Contact.
