I called CC before my organization purchased the full version to see if there was a way to mimic listserv style functionality - like majordomo or Google or Yahoo groups - using Constant Contact. We had e-mail list service with listbox.com, which, in addition to broadcast-style mailings, had an option for discussion mailing lists where anybody could reply and the message would be sent to the whole list. We switched to CC for Drupal integration.
The representative I spoke with at CC said that there was a workaround to allow this, and that it might involve setting up some kind of external forwarder, but that I should call back once we had the full account and ask someone to walk me through setting it up. Now that we have the account, I called CC back and spoke with Melissa, who was very helpful but couldn't find anyone there who knew what the original rep was talking about.
Does anyone know how to get this to happen? Is it possible? Any alternatives? One other route we could go is the set up Mailhandler/Notifications/Messaging in Drupal as described here: http://drupal.org/node/793564 , but we had really wanted our e-mail service to continue handling it.
At this time, Constant Contact is not set up to utilize this kind of listserv functionality natively. Our email marketing service allows and is set up for a one way communication between a Constant Contact customer and their mailing list. While customers certainly have the ability to reply to the email, that reply would only be seen by the sender and not the full group.
This would be possible to implement however, but it would require a fair amount of work on your end to get our service to work like that. This would involve setting up a specific reply address that would take the content of an email received at that reply address to create a new campaign in your account, and then schedule that email to be delivered to the full list.
I apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this. Thanks.
At the time of this post in 2010 Constant Contact did not offer any listserv style functionality for a discussion list. Is that still the case?
Constant Contact does not have a listserv style option at this time. To my knowledge we are not currently looking to develop this in house; however I'm happy to submit your request to our developers and let them know of your interest.
