Adding customer tracking code to email URLs

For our marketing emails, I need to be able to add tracking code to all the email links that will identify the customer who received (and clicked on) the email.  I'd like to be able to use the send-to email as that identifier.  Does anyone know how I can append some tracking code to the end of each URL in the email, i.e. what the field is ("to_email" or something else) and how it should be formatted?  I'm assuming something like "?=to_email", but don't know proper field names or formatting.

Thanks!

Hi @CeceliaB78. I looked into your account and I see that you have a few drafts using our third-generation editor and our custom code editor. Which draft were you trying to insert the dynamic link into? If you wished to continue this conversation privately, you can email us at social_support(at)constantcontact(dot)com with a reference to this post and the information about the draft you were working on.

Going to private conversation really defeats the purpose of a public forum to help others with the same issue.  I am having the exact same issue right now.....

Hi @RobertaC477. We offer to do a private conversation because some customers do not like discussing their accounts publically but I'd be happy to assist you here. Were you trying to insert a dynamic link into one of your drafts as well? I see that your drafts were created using our third-generation editor. At this time, dynamic links are not able to be inserted using this editor. I apologize for this inconvenience but I will submit your feedback to our product team.

Yes Caitlin, that is exactly what I am trying to do.  I have a group that will be traveling together, and each contact has their own link to the program.  And I am trying to use CC to send the email with the link.  I have created a custom field for the link, but when I tested, it failed to input it into the email.  So then I tried dynamic.  Do you have any suggestions as to how I can get this done?

Hi @RobertaC477. Unfortunately, inserting these types of links is not available in the third-generation editor at this time, which is the editor that you are using. I have submitted your feedback to our Product team and I also encourage you to make your voice heard on our Feedback board as well.

How can we do this then? Is there a way to use the old editor?

Or is there no way to do something like an external link to www.example.com/platinum-plan-enrollment-oil/#firstname=%24subscriber.firstname&lastname=%24subscrib...

Hello @ErinH1016,

Thank you for your response!

Unfortunately, at this time it is not possible to use dynamic links in our editing platform. We are currently taking feedback on this and I will be happy to add you to our list of requests for this feature.

Seriously, what are we paying for, this thread is a year down the line and still no dynamic link. I just copied an pasted 400 emails to give my users their unique links ????

@user27407

I will be happy to submit your feedback to our engineering team. In the meantime, we do have a workaround available that you are welcome to try.

If you put the entire code in to the custom field instead of only the dynamic variable you can insert contact details from the custom field and that will allow the link to be dynamic for each contact. Take a look at the article Personal Contact Details for a Custom Code Email for steps on how to do this. For example, you would put something like this in your custom field: http://www.yourdomainhere.com/$Subscriber.Email$

Thanks for reaching out in the Community and providing your feedback.

Have a great day!

Can you elaborate on this workaround?  Will this workaround allow you to have a link where the display text says "click here" or what have you, and the target for the link is a custom field with data like http://www.yourdomainhere.com/blahblahblah

Hi @JuliM4

Thanks for reaching out for clarification on this as I'm sure other customers have this same question too!

To answer your question, no it will not allow you to add a "click here" type link, it will pull in the whole link from the custom field. But that would be a great option to have!

Thanks!

Is it still not possible to do Dynamic Links?

I'm pretty sure this used to be possible with a much older version of CC.

For example, I want to send existing users to an auto-submitting form with a link like the below.

www.mywebsite.com/event/superevent?e={Email Address}

Hi @user8043

I apologize this feature was not carried over to our Third Generation Editor. Instead we suggest inserting the full URL for each contact into a spreadsheet and importing as a custom field. You won't be able to put clickable text for the URL, but the URL will at least get inserted in the email for contacts. Does this workaround work for you?

Hi Frankie.

It really doesn't. At all.

Non-clickable is the first deal breaker and has to be repeated for every event is the second.

I really don't understand why CC is so feature poor.

This is a basic email feature available in every other tool.

Hi Community - In  I was able to  -do a CTA Button (URL LINK) and define and pass the subscribers email address out of a Email Template and send them a calendar invite  --

THe command was *|email|*.. What is the command in Constant Contact to do the same?

Does Constant Contact have a Cheat Sheet ?

Hi @gregh8651

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I can definitely understand how helpful it would be to insert dynamic links like this! At this time being able to insert links like this is not currently available. In the meantime ,as a workaround we suggest putting the entire code into a custom field. Once you do this, in your email will have to then insert it as a standard contact detail. I do also want to mention this will not hyperlink the URL, recipients will have to copy/paste the URL into their browsers. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and have submitted this feature request in your account.

I use the following code in  to allow for automated website logons for my customers.

Is anyone able to assist with what the link would be on Constant Contact as I would like to migrate?  I realize that I will or would need to make a Custom Field which I would call Custom Field 1 and enter each customers authorization code (key).

I am grateful for any assistance.

Hello JamieK675 and thanks for reaching out to the Community! What you are looking to do is possible and you are on the right track by wanting to set up a Custom Field to do this. What we will want to do is create a Custom Field for your contact’s URL in its entirety and not just “key” portion. That way when you insert the Contact Detail it will populate with the full URL link for each contact.
