Best way to keep a contact in the system but stop sending them emails

I've had to make some updates to my contact lists because some people have left the company that they worked for. I want to remove them from future mailing lists, but do not want to lose their history. What is the best way to mark them? Is this a good time to use the temporary hold feature?

I'd recommend putting the applicable contacts on temporary hold, since contacts on temp hold don't count toward your billing.
