Checking ticket holders in at the gate

I'm looking for information as to how to check ticket holders physically at the event itself. I will have ticket checkers at the gate and I'm not sure what equipment they will need. do they scan QR codes? will this automatically check off the ticket so that it can't be used twice? Or do I need to have them line up and get checked in at a laptop for example. I will have a long line if that's the case.
