Currently, in our Third Generation Editor we do not allow access to edit the HTML and have no immediate plans to do so. We want to provide our customers with the abilities to be able to use a user-friendly interface instead of having to rely on a code view to get their desired results. With all the feedback we have been collecting we are planning on making improvements to padding and adding some line spacing elements in the UI. I know this doesn’t solve all use cases, such as adding tables, but we will continue to make strides towards improving the editor.
I understand allowing HTML would increase the ability for more control of your content but it can also have a negative impact on your newsletter’s display in email clients. If we provide access to HTML for every block, changing some of the default styles or content could break display when sent to an email client. Also being able to manually adjust width could have a negative effect. We have a team of amazing engineers constantly testing our templates in all email clients, so you can be certain your email displays consistently across the board. With that in mind, we want to make sure we make it easy to provide the best look and feel not only on the desktop but on mobile. With a majority of opens now leaning towards mobile over desktop we take that as a priority.
Please continue to let us know your thoughts on HTML and what exactly you're trying to do so even if we don't have HTML access we will be able to give you the tools to get your desired outcome.

Thank you for replying back to us and providing this information! I can definitely understand how beneficial and efficient it would be to have HTML access to make these minor changes. I have tracked the request to your account and have provided our developers with the specifics as to why the request is being made as well.
I want to touch on a few of the reasons for the request of HTML. In regards to custom fonts, we don't allow them because of the lack of compatibility they can have with different email clients. It would not be ideal to include font types that are not supported in a wide range of email clients and devices. For inserting text over an image, we do have an image editor tool that allows you insert a text over an image. This can be used for now as a workaround since there is currently no option to do this through the HTML.
You posted this elsewhere within the Community, but as a workaround for the button customization inquiry, you can navigate through different websites that provide tools and allow you to create buttons as images. You can then upload those buttons within the editor and link them with the required URL's.

Wow, this new interface is terrible.
Discounting even common practices of 2019, I think the complaints in this thread run deeper.
Ground level editor tools that control simple HTML 4.01 things like:
- Adjusting an image's horizontal alignment -- gone.
- Padding on a button -- gone
- making a table (a simple one) -- gone
- making a border box -- gone.
- minute adjustments to HTML -- gone.
We may as well have (c) 2006 forced into our email footers because that's about how far back in time this editor pushes us in terms of editability. And this is being generous.
Thank you for sharing this feedback on our editing system. I would however like to point out our newest image editing system does still allow you to adjust an image's horizontal alignment.
Then for the buttons in your emails - while we do not have the option to add padding on a button, have you tried placing a spacer block above or below it? You can add a spacer block then customize how big the block. I also would like to apologize our table feature has not been carried over to our newest editor. Is there anything a 5 column layout will not work for in replacement of a table? As a workaround we suggest creating a screenshot of the table and add to the campaign.
We do however offer the option to insert sections into your email with or without a border. In fact we offer layout blocks under the the Build tab with borders around them.
On the other hand, while we're not currently looking to incorporate HTML access to the editor, we are working to add features that would accomplish these similar goals. Is there anything that you are looking to do through HTML that you have not previously mentioned in this post? We are always open to ways to better our user's experience and can submit these ideas to the appropriate teams.
One more vote for having the HTML editor back.
I need it to have the customized link behind the button.
Looks like I will need to look for an alternative email solution.
Thank you for adding your voice to the discussion. Have you considered using our custom code editor? You have free reign over the HTML code within that editor for building an email with more explicit specifications.
Otherwise the 3ge template builder is going to be your best bet as it is already coded to work best across nearly every email client, and especially for the major ones (e.g. outlook, gmail, yahoo, etc.) - especially for mobile presentation.
I think CC is collecting a list of things people want to do in html, I came across another one today, which is to enter a non breaking space ( ). There are times you really want to keep two words together without using a hard return, which will be handled differently on different devices, browsers, monitors, etc.

Ugh, yes PLEASE bring back the HTML editor for the 3rd generation! I was moving my templates over to the 3rd generation to use the segmentation by tags tool, but am very frustrated that the HTML tool is gone. As an email editing tool, that should be a no brainer to offer your clients.

If the concern is that allowing html editing may cause some things to display improperly on mobile, why not make html access an opt-in for those that would like it? Put up a disclaimer that Constant Contact can't guarantee any changes made to templates will display properly and to proceed at our own risk.
It is incredibly frustrating that the answer to every complaint listed over more than a year in this thread is either a work-around that may or may not fix what would be a very simple html edit, or recreate the entire email using custom code.

I absolutely see how that would be a useful feature and I agree that having it based as an opt in would be very helpful for people of all skill levels when it comes to HTML. As with other feature requests, things tend to be moved up in developer priority based on the number of people asking for something. I look forward to hearing the reasoning they have for not doing it, because I really don't believe they are going to. Such simple things that could be done if this were allowed. I don't know what they are so afraid of. As far as I can recall, they never gave advice on editing html code anyway, so why is it such a big deal now?
Even if you want to use their template and replace the generic text with your own, such an obvious need if you are working with templates, you then have to restyle it, you can't just paste in plain text and have it adopt the styles. Maybe it works if you type it in, I think, but who wants to retype a whole thing they have already typed and edited before starting the email design? So frustrating... And if we had the html we could paste it into the code in one simple maneuver.

No kidding. This has been going on pretty much since the 3G editor was introduced. I see a lot of CTCT employees saying they "really agree" with the importance of access to html. They need to go to bad for the customers if this is true that they really agree.

Add me to the list of folks who would like to see the HTML editor come back! I compile text from my newsletter contributors using multiple platforms, and sometimes the formatting is wonky--I would like to have back the control to fix formatting issues quickly and easily.
We have submitted this feature request in your account! I apologize access to your email's HTML is not currently available. However it does sound like these formatting changes may be a result of copying and pasting from different newsletter contributors. If you are copying and pasting I would suggest taking a look at this article we have to help with removing problematic formatting.
By now you must have quite a collection of reasons people need to access the html code, and I doubt that the powers that be at Constant Contact are planning to do anything about it soon. But I had an experience today that showed a whole new level of why it's needed.
I was working on an email and somehow it got three what I will call "phantom" images--that is the images were in the email but not visible to us when working in the editor. They happened to be images we wanted to use, but when we added in the blocks with the images, we then had double images of these three. They were visible when previewing the email but not when working in the editor, so we had no ability to resize, move, link or delete them. If we could have looked into the code, we could likely have found them and removed them, then added them again in the editor, and then hopefully they would have been visible and editable.
