I want to first apologize for the issues this has been causing everyone. I am the Product Manager of our 3rd Generation Editor and value all feedback given from our customers. I would like to add some color as to why some functionality might seem limited or not meet everyone's exact needs.
One of our main goals that we strive for is trying to make our emails display correctly in all email clients which introduces some challenges. Each email client (Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo etc) reads and renders emails differently. For example many versions of Outlook completely strip all background images . In order to display background images in Outlook we include a snippet of VML code in the email which Outlook *does* render. The only downside to this technique is that the VML code only supports tiling. Outlook ranks third in total overall opens so we want to ensure your background images display there and feel this is more important than opening up other background options that wouldn’t work in Outlook.
Constant Contact also has some restrictions on images that are allowed to be imported into MyLibrary. Images cannot exceed 800 pixels in width. If a customer chose to do anything other than tile the image it could be either distorted (due to it stretching to fit the email display window) or would be so small that it would be hidden by the email content area.
We try to make your editing experience ideal but do understand we can always improve. We are always on the lookout for new techniques for background images that all email clients support. Our goal is to make sure your emails looks great in each email client and you have the functionality and features to make them unique to your business and brand.

Has this been fixed yet? can do it and I'm close to my renewal time on my business license. We may switch just because of this.
I certainly understand why you would like to have a non-repeating background image in your email. I wanted to provide a little more information as to why we do not allow single image backgrounds. Depending on the length of your newsletter, a single background image could stretch or become very distorted when it arrives in your contact's inbox. We allow tiled background images to ensure that the image stays the same throughout the entire length of the email. We suggest you upload an image that will tie seamlessly with itself. We do have a few options available in the editor that you can use. There are also many third party sites with available seamless tiled backgrounds. IN other words - Constant Contact either doesn't care, or refuses to listen to all of these people complaining about the same thing and do something to fix it. You heard what she said - CAN do it, so it CAN be done. I am already in the process of talking to my boss about leaving you guys, because you refuse to solve this issue, even though you have known about it for a long time now. Don't make lame excuses - offers it, so you simply cannot claim that it can't be done. Basic websites have this SIMPLE function. You either don't know HOW to fix it, or you're refusing to. Either way, this is TERRIBLE customer service. We don't want excuses- we want it resolved.
Are there plans to offer a single non-repeating background option?
We'd like our newsletter to match our website but it looks so silly to have the background tile and repeat.
Look how many different people are commenting who are all annoyed at this, and then look how long this problem has been gone on unresolved. Exactly how many customers are you willing to lose before you take action to fix this? A problem like this should be an easy fix - not something you risk losing customers over.
We appreciate your feedback on this feature request! As Aaron_H mentioned, our developers are tracking the requests for this feature to see about prioritizing it for implementation. We do hope that it will be considered soon, as we know it would be a very useful feature to have.

We're always looking to improve our features, and we use customer feedback like yours to help those engineers determine which features should be a priority.

Why can't CC's team build simplistic code into the software which recognizes (or reads) the length of the email being built, and responds accordingly??????? This is not a hard solution unless you are married to antiquated software that you can't update bc the beast you've built will topple if you pull any thread in it's delicate tapestry. If that's the case, you're doomed. You need to rebuild CC's platform or begin addressing common and quite frankly old, issues. One of those two things has to occur to save you from losing market share to much more innovative services who are investing time and energy into listening to their base. CC clearly is not.
