Since our system isn't built to send out plain text emails, you will need to remove a block or two in order to attain what you're looking for. You will want to click on 'Create' in the top right of your account, and then 'Email'. From there you will want to choose the 'Blank Template', which only contains an image place holder.
Once the template is chosen you can remove the image place holder and drag in a text box.

Thanks for your note. I signed up earlier this week and was told 100% I would be able to send plain text emails from the software. I tried your suggestion but I am still unable to use without a template, even though it's blank, it's obviously not formatted as a plain text email.
Are there any other ways around this? If not, I'm afraid I'll need to cancel my subscription.
Great question! When using the Constant Contact product, you will need to use a template for a plain text email so it will always be in template format. Unfortunately, there isn't a workaround for this. This is best practice for marking though as the email is a constant viewable format and is optimized for mobile. We would also like the option for plain text email. Given that data shows plain text email performs better, why is this not an available option?
Thank you for sharing your feedback on this here in the Community. Having the ability to send a plain text email is a feature request we are currently tracking. With that said, I apologize we do not currently have a time estimate of when it will be available. There are many factors that are used to decide what is added to or updated in our product which can cause us to sometimes not have a timeline for when a feature will be available.
You can't send a plain text email? How is this being overlooked. Every measurement has plain text emails out performing formatted emails...
Considering that, this is a deal breaker for us. There's no reason to sacrifice the performance because CC is unwilling to implement.

We'd also like to have this option - plain text emails have historically performed well for us and it's frustrating not to be able to use this marketing tactic now that we are on the Constant Contact platform.
Yep, I'd also love to see a plain text option, really surprised this isn't an option as it can't be that difficult to set up
Constant Contact would clearly get a jump in customer email response rates with the ability to send plain (non-html) emails. This is the arguably the most critical measurement for sending emails. This will need will only increase with further development of spam filters.
I agree. We send out press releases and non-html would be the answer to improve our open rate. I'm tempted to go back to risking getting flagged as a spammer and just sending them from my account ...
We have been a long time constant contact customer and have always done our own custom HTML and plain text formats for email. Before the transition was made to this new 3rd gen based content creator system, it used to be possible for us to edit both custom HTML AND plain text formatting of emails. It also used to be possible to send test previews of both custom HTML and plain text formats. But now with the latest platform shift; there is no longer any way for us to edit and test customer plain text formatting of emails. The new system only allows for custom HTML. This is not good, since many customers and organizations still choose to receive emails in only plain text (mainly for security reasons). We really want to see the custom plain text formatting feature added back into the platform as soon as possible. Thanks!
This is a major problem. I tried sending out an e-mail the way you described and it not only looks bad, but my unsubscribe rate was terrible. Plain text e-mails are more personable and help create a connection with the audience. Formatted templates, while good for some things, always perform worse than plain text. And this is totally fixable, just get your coders to work on it. I am probably not going to stay with this service if this doesn't get fixed.

I think we're all in agreement that the work-around of sending out an HTML email disguised as a plain text email (because you stripped out photos and formatting ... it's still HTML) is not a solution.
