Hi Anthony,

 

For this initial version of Text to Join, you're right that there isn't a way to prompt for additional contact information (like name, address, etc.). But, you also hinted at the solution that we encourage: Ask for additional contact info in your Welcome letter or other auto-responders, because new signups will be receiving that shortly thereafter.

 

(And, by using the Welcome letter to ask for that info, you can also prompt for a lot more info than you'd want to by text message - early tests showed that contacts were far less likely to respond to lots of additional text prompts vs. a single inbox-based follow-up request).

I also wanted to thank Anthony for asking this question and I thank you for addressing this. I wanted to ask a follow-up to this. If in the Welcome Request text, that is sent to the user when they enter the keyword, we ask the user for additional info such as first/last name, company name and title, or other demographic info, in addition to the essential email itself, will Constant Contact or the initial query be able to pull the email address out of that and include it in the list automatically apart from the other information texted by the user? In other words, will the one reply by the user to the keyword they need to enter, work (pull in their email to CC) if they add all the other info we ask for in addition to their email?

 

This would be great. We also would like to collect more information from the user. The ability to do this text-to-join is a really great idea that could really help us. If in some way this could work that would be even better!

Hi Rayna,

 

That's a great question. Right now, Text-to-Join only looks for an email address in replies to the Welcome Request. It's pretty good at finding an email address if there's other text in there too (like if the user has a text signature), but it does not store any part of the text message aside from the email address.

 

I definitely understand that you'd like to collect even more information during a Text-to-Join session, though, and I'll pass that feature request along. Thanks for letting us know this is something you'd like to see added!

I love this idea as well.  Remember you're pretty much restricted to 140 or so characters outbound once you add in the OPT OUT and MMA stuff.

 

Do you have an idea of what you would like to collect?  I am able to provide you with a solution for capturing the inbound SMS that contains the user data.  I can certainly capture this SMS response to an excel file. In addition you would get to keep the user phone number for use if you worded the offer correctly.

 

I can also build a web form that will allow you to collect phone numbers for your SMS distribution list in addition to capturing the customer data for your Constant Contact account.  Hybrid and getting the most out of "multi-channel" marketing.

We want to have a promotion with text to join but want to be able to tell "where" the person is signing up from (ie - if we give away a discounted field trip to a certain school, we need to know what school they are signing up from).  Is there a way to do this?

Hi Karen,

 

Unfortunately, cell phone carriers don't provide us with location information, so there's no way at this time to automatically figure out where people are signing up from. Your best bet is to space out the promotions at your different locations - for example, promote at one school the first week, and then the next school the next week, and so on. That will let you segment your singups by date - especially if you also start a new list each week!

Is there anyway to allocate multiple keywords per account?  Perhaps on a pay per play basis?

I understand that you keep an internal record of text to join requests.  Is there a way for US to track how many are using that method, to see if our promotions are working.  Something in a report that says 10 people signed up via text to join, etc

That is a great idea! We don't have a way to show you that just yet.  What I've seen many users doing though is making a Text-to-Join List and then that way they can track who signs up that way.
