In the past I could add just the month as I send out all birthday and anniversary reminders at the same time. I should not have to change my system to accommodate your format.
If anyone asks me why I don't send anniversary reminders anymore, I will tell them that Constant Contact won't let me.

The reason behind the year in "Anniversary" is that you would be able to tell the length of time someone has been a customer or member with you where as "Birthday" would be a yearly reminder. I absolutely understand how having these fields optional might be helpful for the future.
