Segments improvement

We should be able to have more than one criteria of each type to create a segment (i.e. I should be able to create a segment that targets people who meet BOTH of these criteria: were sent any of the last 5 campaigns AND Opened one of the last 10 campaigns.

It's a great feature. Thank you! to make it more useful, I'd like to request a couple of actions: 1. to be able to export the list 2. to be able to create a List from the group so that I can easily email them all. 3. to be able to click on their name under the segmentation list and easily access their contact information, year they joined, notes etc for ease. @TachinaR Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you like the feature and find it useful. As for your questions you are able to export the segmented list as well as create a list from the segment. If you click on the three dots to the right of your segment it will bring up an option menu with a number of different options for you and adding to a list and export are both options. This is a knowledge base article that shows you how to add a defined list segment to a contact list. As for your third question about being able to click on a contact record from within the segment I understand how this would be useful and will bring this idea up to the product owners.

I wish to create a segment it could be by street name. It only breaks down with city, state, zip and country.

With how the contacts information is stored in your account, the street address would also include the unique house number and then the street name. Are you keeping the street names in a separate custom field or are you wanting segments to be able to pull the street name from the Street Address?

That 3rd point about being able to click on their name to expand for further info, I find the current way to do this very frustrating. Way back when I started using CC (maybe it was 1st gen?), when you pulled up lists of contacts or lists of people who clicked on a link, you could see mutiple columns of their data without clicking into each individual record as you ahve to do now. And in some cases there were two views that provided different data so you could really see a lot of data for multiple contacts on one screen. And further, you could print it out if you wanted to save it for reference. With today's version of CC you can do neither. Even with the meager information supplied in the lists now, you can't print it out because no one has bothered to develop print styles that work for your website, or at least not for that part of it. The only way you can print a list is to keep shrinking it til it fits on one page, because only one page shows content when you print.

@JulieL34 Thank you for the feedback about the ability to see more contact field data without the need to click into the record and how useful it would be to have a better option to print the information.  I can see how this would be useful.  The team is always looking for this type of feedback to give the users a better experience so please continue to provide it.

Hello, I would be incredibly useful, and easy for you to implement, adding an AND and ISNOT (!=) operators to the segment constructor. Right now you only have an OR operator. I can do a lot with segments if you add these. As it stands, not very helpful. Also add more Actions to segment creation. I'd like unsubscribed as an action as example.

I am trying to make a segment based on these criteria: 1. Member of a specific list AND 2. Contact has a custom field = Y AND 3. Contact has a second custom field = DD OR 4. Contact as a second custom field = DR I am unable to specify set up this segment because I can't have two "contact details" sections separated by an AND. To describe the query I need in general terms... Give me a list of contacts from LIST1 where the contacts have a CUSTOM FIELD 1 or "Y" AND (the contacts have a CUSTOM FIELD 2 of "DD" OR "DR)

It would be great if segments could be created using multiples of the same type of criteria, and to exclude contacts on a specific list. For example, contacts who opened email A, but didn't click on any links in email A, and are not on email list Z. I have follow-ups that I'm sending to a list, but don't want to email them if they've already completed the event signup process. Some people who have already signed up didn't sign up by clicking through the email.

Hey @KirkW13, thanks so much for sharing your feedback! We're actually working on some of these features already and once they're available, I'll be sure to update this thread. We will have the ability to exclude those not on a list as well as add multiple criteria for each category. We're still looking into segmenting people in a list and not in another, so I've opened this idea for voting.

I am trying to create a list of "inactive" contacts which I am defining as those that have been consistently receiving our emails for a length of time (two years) AND have never opened any. I want to begin the process of updating or removing these inactive emails from our email list. Having more options in segmentation would vastly improve this.

My current idea to accomplish this is to (Step 1) create 24 segments by contact activity, each segment with the criteria of "were sent" for a one-month timeframe, such as "were sent 1/1/2017-1/31/2017."  (I can't simply do one segment with a two-year timeframe because I want to ensure the contacts have been getting emails the whole time, not just once or a few or even half of that two-year timeframe. We send emails to our entire list at least once a month.). Next (Step 2) I take the 24 segments, export them, and combine them into one Excel spreadsheet, then remove all the records that don't appear in every segment. Now I have a list of contacts that were sent email in every single month for two years. (Step 3) I create one more segment by activity, for "opened" during that total two-year time frame. I export and add that to my Excel sheet and remove duplicates so that the only remaining contacts are those which received email campaigns in every month for two years but never opened any.

This feels like a ridiculous amount of work to get a list that meets this criteria: Was sent email in every month from Jan. 2017 through Jan. 2019 AND never opened. Is there a better way to do this?? Adding multiple criteria for each category seems to be the answer, but until that feature is available (IF it become available), what do I do?

I like this idea but need to be able to click more options for criteria. It is very limited. Anything that we are using we should be able to segment from. I wanted to do a mass look and put all the contacts that didnt have an email address filled out in a segment so I could mass export them to have someone contact them if there is a phone number which was another option that wasnt available

Please allow the option to have an or and not just an "and" with the list critera. Right now if I want to add a list to my criteria, it will only do an "and" and I would like to do an "or" so I can just add the people in the list.

Thanks for your response.  I would like there to be the option to do an "and" or an "or" when adding a list.  Since we can't select multiple segments, I was trying to add a list to the segment to include the individuals in that list.  Once I selected the list, it automatically puts an "and" completely is the opposite of what I want.Screenshot for CC Segment Suggestion.png

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What I am trying to accomplish is to add all the contacts in a list to the segment criteria, but that isn't possible as it is doing an "and" which makes the names in the list to be included with the other criteria.  Hope that makes sense.

we notice that there is a major difference in the behaviour between our readers using desktop and mobile devices to read the email. Thus, we like to segment by the criteria of device used. can you help to advise how we can do so?

This is awful. I cannot segment based on emails older than a certain range. I cannot segment a list based on belonging to another list. I'm better to segment in excel and upload new lists for every purpose.

Hello @LauraC0046. Thank you so much for the feedback about our Segment feature. How far back were you looking to pull data from when adding a criteria section under Contact Activity? What criteria were you using?

 

Also, for segmenting "a list based on belonging to another list", could you explain this more? Were you looking for an AND option so you could filter contacts who belong to two lists or maybe filter those who belong to one list but not another? Any examples you could provide here would be very helpful so I can send it over to the correct team.

1. We wanted to create a segment to omit those that received the last monthly email, so timeframe of 1 month. We want to apply 2 criteria: "those on a list" AND "didn't receive the last month's email". However we can't select that last monthly email if we sent out too many communications in the last month.

 

Separate to that issue

2. When trying to segment by 'custom fields' it omits numerous custom fields. So if we asked someone for their interests, and try to segment by that specific interest, we only have a handful of fields (~20/40) to choose from. Doesn't seem to be any reason why some are included and others are not.

 

3. Short of #2. working, we have segmented the main list via Excel and our CRM to generate a new list to upload. We don't want those receiving the personalized email to also receive the general email, so we tried to omit them by filtering the 'Main' list by the 'New' list we generated.

 

Hopefully this gives a little more clarity.

Any chance you can develop a folder system in the segment portion. It would be so helpful to be able to have a folder for "Birthdays" and a folder for "Nations"....just thought it might help others as well.

Hi @LauraC0046. I apologize for the delay in my reply. 

 

#1 - For Contact Activity in segments, there is a limit of 25 emails that will show in the dropdown when selecting a specific email. I've noted your feedback and sent it to our product team as I can see this being an issue if users send frequently. 

 

#2 - I brought up your account and saw 50 custom fields displaying, not the 20 or 40 you mentioned which might be a browser issue such as screen size or zoom setting. Additionally, the custom field dropdown in segments is limited to 50 custom fields. Since you have more than 50, not all of them will display and the segmenting will need to be manually done outside of Constant Contact as you noted in #3. Expanding the limit of custom fields is a request that we have heard as well.

What would be more helpful than the date added (in our case in particular) would be the date clicked AND invitation/list clicked. It would be great to select criteria/tailor to needs.

Why can we not send an email to a segment that has responded "Yes" to an RSVP?  I was astounded that this is not available.

Hi @SherylB2. This is a great idea. Although results from an action block can't be used as criteria in segments, you can add these respondents to a list and email them this way.  

In the Email List section, please add "+AND" as an option in addition to the "+OR" option. It would be MUCH easier to do this instead of trying to coordinate tags or making another 50 lists.

Hi @TimothyF. Company is a criterion you can use when creating a segment. To make sure I'm understanding your request, would you like to have Company show as a column on the segment report?

I would like to create a list that is 

List A BUT NOT List B

My List A is General Interest (all contacts) and List B is one I created that is Members. I would really like to have a Not Members list (to encourage membership).

Suggestion to add ability to segment users by zipcode radius in Email campaigns. Benefit is higher personalization of emails, which could potentially lead to higher opens and higher sales. (PS: mailchimp is already doing this)
