Subtracting Contacts in One List from Another

Just had great help from both your Chat and Your Phone Support. But still don't understand how this works. Somehow "adding" contacts from one list will actually "subtract" them from another to create a shortened list. I'm not talking about duplicates but actually removing contacts. I think this is very hard to figure out and understand. Thankfully, your Phone rep was able to do it for me. I suggest you create an actionable item for this purpose.
