Cannot update a record

I am trying to update a contact field and the form won't save because "The email address is already in use by Jeffrey Heras" but in fact the email is supposed to be for Jeffrey Heras. How do I save a person's email if he is already captured elsewhere in the system?

Thank you for reaching out to us! I have a few clarifying questions before i'm able to accurately answer your questions. Are you searching in your contacts for Jeffrey Heras and then editing his contact details, but it won't save the new information? What new information are you attempting to add?
