Phone Numbers Change to "links"

Whenever I insert a phone number in my emails (no matter where it is in the email) when the email gets sent, it's automatically changed into a "link" and it gets underlined and the color is changed to blue. I don't want this to happen. It does not look good and if I have a certain background color, it then makes the phone number difficult to see/read. Is there a way to keep this from happening?

I modfied an email template and used my own colors. In the new layout/color scheme, I have a couple of phone numbers in white text over a dark green background. When the test email shows on an iphone and some windows computers (I'm on a Mac) the phone numbers show as links in the standard dark blue color.


I don't see any "link" color in the template I used and I realize that there may be settings in browsers or the iphone that would over-ride a link color I set, but is there any way to control this? I have edited some html/css code int he past so would be willing to try that if someone can direct me where to look _ I know that I can edit the html of particular text blocks but since I have no links setup, not sure where this might be stored in my email

Hi Jeff,


I looked into this for you and here is what I have found out:


  • All phones are going to make the number blue so that you can click on it to call that phone number if you choose
  • Some email clients will display the phone number as link so that you can call from skype if it's installed on your computer


Could you let me know which email clients are displaying the phone number as a link and if they have Skype installed?

The style editor does not support "classname a {<attributes>}"


So how do I specify an inline link style to remove and/or change the blue link that iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) automatically aplies to address and phone numbers and dates?

Answering my own question...


This seems to work very well for phone number:


<a href="#" style="color: #FFFFFF; text-decoration: none; pointer-events: none;">(555) 555-55555</a>

  And for Address:


<a href="#" style="color: #FFFFFF; text-decoration: none; pointer-events: none;">555 Somewhere Rd. • Anywhere, Mystate 55555-5555</a>


In the example above I wanted the phone and address to be white as it is on a black background.


I no longer have the iOS blues!

Thanks for posting here. Unfortunately lots of email clients will automatically underline the phone number to make it easier to click and call. Gmail is a popular email client that does this. When the number is clicked it would make the call using Google Voice. Another common situation where you might see the underlines is when the email is viewed on a mobile device. 



  • All phones are going to make the number blue so that you can click on it to call that phone number if you choose
  • Some email clients will display the phone number as a link so that you can call from skype if it's installed on your computer


A workaround we do suggest is manually turning the phone number into a link in order to have control over how it looks. However it is still possible an email client might still try to make it blue so it is good to test your email before sending. I am also happy to take a closer look if you would like. Please let us know the name of the email you are working on and what email clients you are sending too.

Thanks for answering Hannah. I did not realize that this was something that was happening on the "receiving" end of my email. I thought that it was a setting that I had wrong or could change within my original email. I have myself on my email list and I use a gmail account, so it make sense that I would see this happening every time. Unfortunately, it sounds like there is nothing that I can do on my end. My list has a lot of different email clients (as I am sure we all do), so I guess I will just have to let this go. :-)

I'm seeing this, though, when I'm COMPOSING the emails! I'm using specified colours to have a uniform customised colour palette. How can I stop this default? I removed the tags from the HTML code, and they automatically still pop up. I'm using Google Chrome, but this seems something that Constant Contact should allow to be changed, as a default preference? I don't want these automatic links to Google Voice!!!!

Thank you for your comment.  If you have Google Voice or Skype installed on your computer, this issue can be caused directly from a setting within those programs.  Access those programs and enter the settings.  Disable browser integration.  This will stop those programs from interfering with Constant Contact or any other web based program you may have. 


If you don't have either installed or if you still have the issue, I would recommend getting in touch with our support team. Make sure that you have the code you are removing from the HTML, your username, operating system and version, web browser type and version, name of the email you are working on and where exactly the problem occurs.  Also you could try a different web browser other than Google Chrome to see if that resolves the issue as Chrome is known to take what it considers links and converting it into one no matter what code you enter.

Just wanted to thank-you for your post. I was having the IOS Blues and support at CC did not have a HTML fix until I found your post and directed them to it. Eric in the tech team was able to take your code and adapt it to CC's HTML and no more blue's.
