How to Manually Export your Gmail Contacts

Have you ever had issues synching your Gmail contacts into your Constant Contact account? Is it importing all your contacts when you only want to select a few? Is it importing all the Contact data when you only need the basics?


For more control over who and what gets imported into your Constant Contact account, here’s a great step-by-step guide on how to manually export them from Gmail into an Excel file:


  1. Log into your Gmail account
  2. Click Gmail on the left side and select “Contacts” from the drop down menu
  3. Click More and click Export





4. Select the group of contacts that you would like to export or select “All Contacts” to export everyone.

5. Select "Outlook CSV".





6.Click Export and in the File Download dialog box, click Save.

7. Choose a location in your computer and click OK to save the file.


Once you have the Excel file saved to your computer, you want to open it to see the data that’s been exported. Note that Gmail exports everything so the file will have plenty of columns. Feel free to delete the columns that are empty and the ones you don’t need to make importing a much quicker process. From here, also delete the rows of contacts you don’t want to import.


When your file is ready to go, save it to your computer and follow these steps to import them to your account, like you would import any contact file:


  1. Log into Constant Contact
  2. Click Contacts tab at the upper right
  3. Click “Add Contacts” button and select “Add from File”
  4. Click “Choose File” button and select the file from your computer and click Continue
  5. Match the fields in Constant Contact with the fields in your Excel file and click Continue
  6. Select the list to add them to by clicking the + sign (Optional – add or create a tag for the list you are importing)
  7. Click Import

It should finish importing in a few minutes depending on the list size. You can click the Activity link on the yellow toolbar to check the progress. Once completed, go back to Contacts page and click on your list name and all your Gmail Contacts should now be there.
