Our member database has a date field called "Expiration Date". We would love to be able to create a segment that includes those contacts whose Expiration Date is greater than today, i.e. our current active members. Segmenting based on a specific date in a date field doesn't seem nearly as useful as being able to segment based on a range of before or after a specific date.

Seconded! This would be immensely helpful to membership organizations/associations using Constant Contact or anyone who has an annual paid subscription business model where subscribers should rotate off the active list on a monthly basis if they don't renew.
