You spent real time writing that email. You crafted the subject line, nailed the preview text, built the offer. Someone opened it. They clicked. And then... they landed on your homepage... and left.
Sound familiar? The post-click experience is one of the most overlooked gaps in small business email marketing, and it's quietly killing conversions every single day.
Picture this: A local fitness studio sends a great email promoting a "New Member Summer Special." The call-to-action button says "Claim Your Offer." The subscriber clicks and lands on the studio's general homepage with no mention of the summer special anywhere. No offer. No context. No next step. Just… a website. Confused and underwhelmed, they leave.
The email did its job. The experience after the click didn't.
Here's the hard truth: every extra click you make someone take after that first one loses 20-30% of your visitors. The post-click experience isn't a "nice to have" - it's where your email marketing either pays off or falls apart.
Here's how to fix it:
TIP 1: Match the landing page to the email - exactly
Whatever your email promised, your landing page must deliver - with the same headline, the same offer, the same energy. If there's a disconnect between what they clicked for and what they see next, trust evaporates instantly. The email and the page should feel like one seamless experience, not two separate conversations.
Example: A boutique sends an email about a "Summer Flash Sale - 25% off everything." The landing page leads with "Summer Flash Sale - 25% Off Everything" in big bold letters, not the store's general homepage. The subscriber knows immediately they're in the right place.
TIP 2: One page, one action
The biggest conversion killer? Giving people too many choices once they click. Your post-click page should have one clear goal - book an appointment, claim an offer, fill out a form, buy a product. Remove navigation menus, extra links, and anything that pulls attention away from that single action. The more focused the page, the higher the conversion.
Example: A spa running a "Book a Summer Facial" campaign removes its full website navigation from the landing page entirely. The only options are a short booking form and a "Book Now" button. Appointment bookings from email double compared to linking to the main site.
BTW if you don't have a quick and easy way to build said landing page on your website and remove the navigation options, simply build your landing pages in your Constant Contact account. You can use the same easy drag-and-drop builder that the system uses for emails!
TIP 3: Think mobile first - always
Over 60% of emails are opened on mobile. (My system shows up to 75%!) If your post-click page is slow, forces people to pinch and zoom, or unclear, you've lost them. Check your landing pages on your phone before every send. Load speed, button size, and form simplicity aren't technical details, they're conversion decisions.
Example: A restaurant sending a "Reserve Your Table" email tests the reservation link on three different phones before sending. They catch that the form submit button is hidden below the fold on smaller screens - a fix that takes five minutes but saves dozens of lost bookings.
Getting the open is a win. Getting the click is a bigger win. But the conversion? That happens after the click - on a page that's ready to receive them. That's where the real results live.
💬 Over to you: Where do you currently send people when they click in your emails - a dedicated landing page, a specific product page, or your homepage? Have you ever tested different destinations and seen a difference in results?
