custom image for each contact

Hi I have a custom field, imageurl, specifying an image URL for each contact. When I try to set the URL for an image in an email, it will not accept something like [[custom.imageurl]]. I get the message, 'That image URL is not valid. Give it another shot.' Does Anyone know of a solution? Thanks
