Avoiding Google Mail's "Promotions" category

When I send out an email requesting donations for my non-profit, Google puts it into the "Promotions" category. How do I avoid that and instead have them put in the Primary or Update categories?

Hi dgrabel,

There's no guaranteed way to get emails into Gmail's Primary or Updates tabs, as Gmail's algorithm and user settings control this. However, some best practices can help your emails avoid the Promotions tab.

Here are some actionable steps you can take:

1. Make Your Email Feel Personal

Gmail often flags messages as "Promotions" when they look like bulk emails.

  • Use the recipient's name in the subject line and greeting (e.g., “Hi Sarah,”).

  • Write in a conversational tone as if you’re writing to one person.

  • Avoid overly promotional language like “Buy now,” “Limited time,” “Donate today.”

2. Use a Recognizable “From” Name

Ensure the “From” name is either a real person at your nonprofit or your organization's name — not just a generic department.

3. Simplify the Design

Emails with a lot of images, buttons, or promotional-style formatting often land in Promotions.

  • Use a plain-text style or minimal formatting.

  • Limit the number of links, images, and buttons.

  • Make your donation request feel like a personal message rather than a campaign.

Test Before You Send

Send test emails to Gmail addresses and see where they land.

  • If they go to Promotions, tweak the language, formatting, and subject line and try again.
