Does Updating Your Profile Remove You From Lists That Are Not Choices

We are looking into breaking our main lists up into ones based on the interests of the recipients. So far, the best way I have come up with to do this is to send out an email that requests people to update their profiles using the link in the footer. To this end, we would first make new lists based on different interests and give these as options in the "Update Profile" form.

This seems like it could work for us, but we did have a question.

If a list is not given as an option in the "Update Profile" form and someone fills out the form, will they be removed from any lists that are not given as options?

We have a few lists currently that are for VIPs or certain exclusive groups that we would not want people to be able to sign up for using the "Update Profile" form, but we also do not want people from these lists to be removed from them if the update their profiles to receive fewer emails that do not interest them.

If this will not work how we are wanting it to, is there another way to do this that would work?

Hello @user6013 ,

Only lists included in Update Profile forms will display and be manageable by the contacts that click them. If you don't include a list in the UP form, they won't be able to see nor add/remove themselves from it.

Other options to do what you're wanting to do is to consider some of the following:

  • Use a coded sign-up form (such as an inline form) you install on your site, and redirect your contacts to that form to have them explicitly opt into specific lists they're interested in.
  • Create a bunch of landing page forms you can link to in your email, website, or social pages. This will allow you to ask for specific custom field info depending on the list being signed-up for, or be as simple as just asking for them to confirm their email address and submit.
  • Create a very simple custom landing page to be a "Thank you for your response," and link that throughout your email for each topic. Then, by using Click Segmentation, when a contact clicks that particular topic's hyperlink to the custom thank you page, it'll automatically add them to the relevant list.
  • Utilize a survey, and have contacts fill it out for topics they're interested in via short answer, dropdown, etc. and then manually add the contacts to the relevant interest lists.
