Inserting text and images when working on an iPad

I seem to have a problem working from my iPad.  When travelling, I have to create the email using my iPad but the ease of inserting an image or a text block hasn’t been easy for me.  I can’t find a way to make it work the first time.  What am I doing wrong?  Even the paste button does not seem to work.  Thank you for any reply.
