Unable to create segment based on custom field

We've been trying to divide up our contacts by geographical segments, and added a custom field where we record their region. When creating a segment, I used the criteria "Custom Field / Is/ [Region Name]" But even though I've typed in and saved the region name for all of our contacts, the segment still comes up blank every time. Do I need to create the custom field in a different way?
