When you create a list for contacts in Constant Contact, one of the best ways to grow it is by assigning it to a sign-up landing page. But accidents happen! What happens if you accidentally delete that list while your landing page is still active and out in the wild?
The Problem: Unassigned Contacts
Don't panic—your landing page won't break. It will actually continue to accept new contacts. However, because the destination list is gone, those new subscribers will be dumped into your general contact database without a list assignment. This makes it difficult to track where they came from when you're cleaning up or organizing your audience later.
If you revisit the settings for your landing page, you'll see a messy system message where your designated Contact list used to be. It usually looks something like this:
Chunky Monkey* (deleted at 2025/01/14 12:34:56.789000etc.)
The Solution: The "Restore" Workaround
If you want to restore the list, the bad news is that deleted lists are technically gone forever. The good news is that getting your landing page back on track is a quick fix. Just follow these steps:
Create a Replacement List: Go to your Contacts tab and create a new list using the exact same name as the deleted one.
Re-Add Old Contacts (Optional): Creating a list with the same name does not magically resurrect the old contacts. You will need to manually add them back to this new list if you still have them in your database.
Round Up the "Lost" Contacts: To find the people who signed up while your list was deleted, filter your general contacts by Date Added. Select the contacts who joined during that window and add them to your new list.
Update the Landing Page: Finally, you must edit your landing page. Choose the newly created list from the dropdown menu, and reactivate the page.
Once you update the landing page settings, you'll be back in action and ready to collect organized sign-ups!
