At the same time. Now I've gotta create a seoarate list for just buyers and a list for just vendors

There's been no significant changes to the Contacts import functionalities over the past few months, or even the past few years. 

It sounds like you had a particular custom field where you denoted whether a contact was a buyer or seller. Or you imported them as separate lists before. Or you imported that info as tags. Have you checked your existing contacts to see how you originally imported this info?
