Feedback on Bot Open Filtering and next steps

Folks,

Thank you for all of the feedback you've sent to me over the past few days on the updates we're made to Open Rate calculations. For anyone who is unaware, we launched a new Bot Open Filtering system on Friday last week to improve the accuracy of open rate calculations for all customers. There are details in my announcement if you have questions about how things work.

This is a big change; there are a lot of people out there opening their emails in Apple Mail with privacy features enabled and there will be significant impacts to open rates.

We've heard a lot of the same requests from folks now that the changes are live, and I'm working with the Reporting team on our first wave of enhancements to give you more visibility into what's happening "under the hood."

There are three items in the pipeline right now:

  • We are adding a drill-down report for Proxy Opens that you'll be able to access on the Reporting tab for your email. This will tell you who we logged the proxy open for and when it was logged.

  • We're making some changes to the Email Reporting page to show the "classic" Open Rate in the table under the Sankey chart (confirmed + proxy opens), so it'll still be there if you need to reference it.

  • We're making an update to the Sankey chart to stop counting proxy opens as "non-openers" -- proxy opens are ambiguous (we don't know for sure if someone opened the email themselves or not), so you'll see the Delivered band split into three sections: one for confirmed opens (we are sure a person opened this message), one for proxy opens (a machine definitely opened this, but we're not sure if a person did), and one for Did not open (we haven't seen any open traffic for these contacts).

I (and the Reporting team) appreciate your patience as we get these improvements out to you. If this is something you're struggling with, please leave a reply here or private message me if you'd like to chat 1:1.

We want to build the tools you need to make this change work better for you.

Thanks again folks, we appreciate your time and feedback.
