Grab Attention with These Subject Line Best Practices

The first step to engaging your audience is getting them to open the email. That means making a killer first impression with your subject line and preheader. In 2026, it’s still a mix of art and science—but we have more data than ever to help you get it right.

What is the difference between a subject line and preheader?

The subject line is the bold text people see first. In the example below, it’s "Get Your New Gear for the New Year."

The preheader (or preview text) is the text that follows the subject. In our example, it starts with "Start 2026 Off Rockin’, Rollin’." Think of the subject line as the hook and the preheader as the bait.

What elements are essential for a subject line?

  • Short and Sweet: In 2026, over 50% of emails are read on mobile. Keep your subject line to 4–7 words (under 40 characters) so it doesn't get cut off.

  • Personalized: Using dynamic fields to include a recipient’s name can boost opens by 10-15%.

  • Relevant & Actionable: Be clear about what’s inside. If it’s a "Flash Sale," say so.

  • Emoji Strategy: One emoji is great for standing out, but don't overdo it or you'll trigger spam filters.

  • Sentence Case: Avoid ALL CAPS. It looks like shouting and is a common spam trigger.

How to craft the best subject line?

With the best practices in mind, you still have to write them! Use these 2026 tools to help:

  • Ask the AI Assistant: Click the AI Assistant icon in the top-right of your dashboard. It can recommend subject lines and preheaders based on your email's content in seconds.

  • Utilize A/B Testing: Let your audience choose the winner. A/B testing sends two versions to a small group (we recommend a list of at least 1,000 for the best data) and automatically sends the winning version to everyone else.

  • Review the "Confirmed" Reporting: When you check your reports, look for Confirmed Opens. This is a new 2026 metric that filters out bot activity, giving you the most accurate view of who actually opened your email.

Michael Schaubroeck, Manager of House of Guitars, keeps it simple: "We try to keep things interesting and change the subject up a lot to make sure people are definitely looking at what we're sending."

What are some examples of subject lines?

  • Value-focused: “Essential Oils… Learn what they do!” – Mother Earth Pillows

  • Open-ended questions: “Who was Wonder Woman’s Role Model?” – Strong Women, Strong Girls

  • Deadlines: “Cruisin’ 4 Critters is August 2nd—Register Today!” – Manchester Animal Shelter

  • Announcements: “The winners of the postcard contest are…” – Fluent City

The possibilities are endless, especially with a little help from AI. Share in the comments what subject lines have worked best for you this year!
