Remove Contact from List with Unconfirmed Status

I've submitted a request via the V2 API to remove an account from a list and the contact is has the Unconfirmed status.  The contact isn't being removed from the list however.  What other solutions can I do from an API side?

Contacts that are in Awaiting Confirmation status can’t have their list memberships edited until they have confirmed their subscription to your newsletters, either through the Confirm Opt-In email, or through Constant Contact’s list growth tools, such as a Landing Page or Sign-up Form. Below I’m including a detailed support article with more information on this status.
