The event has not taken place yet. It's the registration portion that needs to be reopen. Most of the time people have a registration period prior to the event taking place. In my situation the registration period is what we needed to be extended but we were not able to extend it because the date we set for registration to end had past. Either way, things change and users should have the option to adjust events and dates that are created especially if they are trying to maintain any registration information for that particular event. What if someone had to reschedule the event and they don't want to lose the registration information they already have? Simply updating the details would be more effective instead of creating a new event to get people to re-register.
