The status of my newly create API key is waiting. In the past, the status was set to active almost immediately.
Is there something wrong with my account or is this a backend issue?

Thank you for reaching out to Constant Contact API Developer Support. My team is here to assist outside software developers with questions about building into Constant Contact's API.
I changed the status of the API Key from Waiting to Enabled for you. This issue often occurs when multiple API Keys are created in a short span of time. Essentially it's just a provisionary period before they're enabled but I overridden the status.
