I did try to re-import the contacts, but it did not change the "source" and the field remains blank. We have chosen to add a tag to these contacts instead to better identify them.

Sometime in November 2013, it appears that Constant Contact either added the source field or required a contact's source field to be filled in. That field is hard coded and cannot be changed. However, our organization has roughly 60 contacts that we added prior to November 2013 and are still active. Is there a way to update their source field so it's not blank but we can retain their email send and behavior history?
