Thanks for reaching out to the Community with your questions! At this time when you add a background image to a template in the third generation editor there is no way to prevent the image from tiling. Also, because you are limited to selecting one image for the background there would not be a way to have a gradient and a tiled image. This is something that I can pass along feedback on for you in hopes we can offer this option for you in the future.
In the meantime, I did locate a Design Tip in this help article that stated: "The best background images appear seamless so you can't tell where one tile ends and the next begins. If you're looking for a subtle image that tiles correctly, there are hundreds of opensource images available from Toptal.com." This may help you find a better image that works for your needs.
