Correct, if you use the section editor to add a different background at any point, it will override the selections in the Design tab. The only way to have access to the Design tab outer background editing is to either:
Undo your changes until you're back to only using the Design tab's settings
Copy from a template where you haven't used the section editor for the outer background
Create a new template
Continue using your draft campaign that has had the section editor used, and manually apply the base patterns as custom-imported images, as directed in this Community thread.
