Growing your list from scratch may seem like a daunting task, but it can also be an exciting fresh start! Take just a few simple steps to start growing your list. First, get eyes on your business. Then, turn those visitors into contacts, and finally manage, grow, and clean your lists. Maintaining your contact list is an ongoing task.

Getting visitors to your site is the most important part of the entire process. That’s why we have an easy, step-by-step guide for you to follow on how to Find the Right Audience with Paid Media.

Beyond paid media, posting relevant social media content on your own social pages is another effective way of increasing traffic. And don’t worry! Once again, we have a guide to help you out. Take a look at our Engage Your Customers on Social Media article for tips.

Implement one of the strategies laid out in the guides to start increasing traffic to your website. When your visitors arrive, make it easy for them to become one of your contacts with sign-up forms that are prominent and visually appealing. By adding a prominent sign-up form to your website, you create a seamless experience for your audience. The type of sign-up form you choose depends on the layout of your website and what makes sense for your audience.

We have a few types to choose from:

  • Inline - Embeds wherever you can put it, across multiple webpages.
  • Pop-up - Pops into view after a specific amount of time.
  • Fly-out - Slides into view while people are browsing.
  • Banner - Stretches across the top or bottom of the page.

Want to supercharge your lead capture capabilities? Take advantage of the many tools and integrations available to sign up new contacts. Like Neat, whose scanning software eliminates manual data entry for those old business cards you keep in your wallet, digitizing them in minutes.

As you build your list, you'll need to maintain it. That means, keeping your list clean, monitoring unsubscribes, and segmenting your list(s) based on your audience's interests and needs. Read Evaluate and Clean Up Your Email Lists to manage your list as it grows.

Our team at Solutions for Growth can certainly add to VanessaM730‘s important insights on effective list-building tools. Just as a reminder - building an organic email list is crucial because it allows you to cultivate warm connections with individuals who genuinely want to engage with your brand (or business). These targeted subscribers are MUCH more likely to convert into repeat customers, as they’ve opted in to receive your content and communications, fostering a relationship built on trust and value.

Here are some additional tools and strategies to consider (when building an email list) that can help cultivate a loyal audience and enhance your marketing efforts:

  1. Content Upgrades: Develop valuable content (e-books, checklists, templates) that users can access in exchange for their email address.
  2. Webinars and Events: Host webinars or live events that require email registration, which helps build your list while providing value.
  3. Referral Programs: Encourage existing subscribers to refer friends by offering incentives, such as discounts or exclusive content.
  4. Networking and Partnerships: Collaborate with other creators or businesses to co-host events or share audiences, which can help grow your list.
  5. SEO and Content Marketing: Create valuable blog content with lead magnets that encourage visitors to subscribe to your email list.
  6. Consistency and Engagement: Regularly send newsletters or updates to keep your subscribers engaged and encourage them to share your content.
  7. Social Proof and Testimonials: Display testimonials or success stories from your subscribers to build trust and encourage sign-ups. Highlight the benefits and value others have gained from being part of your email list.
  8. Nurture Sequences Email Series: Develop automated nurture sequences for new subscribers, providing them with valuable content over a series of emails. This keeps them engaged and enhances retention.
  9. Exclusive Access and Previews: Early Bird Offers - give subscribers early access to new products, services, or content. This exclusivity can incentivize sign-ups and strengthen loyalty.
  10. Cross-Promotion: Promote Across Channels - leverage your different marketing channels (blogs, videos, podcasts) to promote your email list. Each channel can drive traffic to your sign-up forms.

The Solutions for Growth team brings decades of experience in implementing effective strategies that enhance our client’s email list-building efforts from scratch, ultimately fostering a more engaged and committed audience for their businesses. Can I help you by discussing a few ideas to get started?

I can mention a few under-the-radar list-growth tools that you'll want to know about if you have a brick-and-mortar location or if you attend trade shows, or other face-to-face events where you're going to network with customers and supporters.

  • The Constant Contact mobile app lets you scan business cards to add them as a contact. You can choose to add the contact to any list that's already created in your Constant Contact account too.
  • The ListBuilder app for tablets lets you collect names and email addresses while you're offline, and then syncs them to your Constant Contact account when you're back on your reliable wi-fi! You can only add contacts to one list, but you can create one and select it ahead of time, and then manage your contacts later.
  • Text-to-join is also handy when you're "offline" - you just share the instructions on a sign, display it prominently, and your contacts sign themselves up through their own cellphone. It also has the added bonus of collecting SMS opt-in so your contacts can be contacted via email and/or SMS. You also can only designate one list for new contacts to be added to, but you can change the list as needed, and contacts can be moved to different lists from within your Constant Contact account too!
