Thank you for reaching out to the Community! Duplicating the lists and removing contacts from it is one way to send to the contacts you want. A new way to filter your contacts is by tagging. You are now given the option to filter by tags and choose how you want to narrow down when scheduling your email.

Users with less than 10,000 contacts in their account have the option to tag the unwanted list and limit their recipients by this tag. This feature is however not available in account with over 10,000 contacts in it. Instead we suggest following these steps to create a list for the desired tagged contacts and schedule the email to this list instead.
At this time, in order to perform this action within your account you would need to create the list of contacts to send to. In order to do this, there are a few steps involved:
The other option, if you are using a third-generation campaign, is to add all of "Clients of X" to a tag and then choose the "Don't send to contacts who are also tagged with" option when scheduling an email.

I've used this method in the past with success, but I tried again today for two new emails and it's not working. I don't get the - symbol to exclude. Has something changed? Is there another work around?
You're right, this process was updated recently. Instead of having one function to add and remove we've broken them out into their own steps. If you wanted to compare one list to the other you would need to select the contacts and remove them from the lists you don't want them in. For example, John Smith, firstname.lastname@example.org is on my General Interest list and I want to make sure this is the only list he is on. I could check him off and click "Manage Lists" > "Remove from lists" and then check all the lists I don't want him part of.

The updated steps don't make sense to me.
I have a general list. I also have a list of people who have bought Product A. I want to send a sales email about Product A. But I want to eliminate everyone who has already purchased the product, which means I want to elimate everyone on my Product A list..
How do I remove all Product A names from the General List for this one-time mailing? Do I have to create a new list, add in all the Product A names, then manually go through and hunt for duplicates and delete both sets of emails from any name that shows up twice? Goofy!

There isn't a way to make this a one time change--you would need to make duplicates of each list in question.
Once you have copies of the lists (Lets call them General Interest 2 and Product A2) you would want to open, view and select all the contacts in list Product A2. Click Manage list > Remove from List and then uncheck the General Interest 2 list.

I guess this is a workaround but it seems like an overly complicated solution for an ordinary emailing need. Is Constant Contact working on a new feature for this? I'm frustrated by how time consuming this is and how duplicative it becomes... a bunch of new contact lists for every time you want to send to a list, excluding X people. Please come up with a better solution for this.
I apologize for any inconvenience this workaround may cause! Being able to limit your sends in an easier way can be done through a tag on accounts with less than 10,000 contacts. Because you (along with other users in this thread) have a larger amount of contacts, we suggest these steps of manually creating a new list for the desired contacts and scheduling the email to that list. Being able to limit your contact by tag in accounts with over 10,000 contacts is however a feature request we have tracked in your account. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist with in the meantime.
Update: With a list of under 10,000 (which I have right now, but won't have in about 2 weeks), I created a Suppression Tag and then tagged the customers in my Shopify Customers list that I did not want to receive a certain email. Then I set up the email, and excluded anyone that is labelled with that tag. This should work great and certainly much easier than duplicated lists and deleting people.. (SMH). BUT if you have a list of over 10,000 I haven't gotten that far with this system yet but I'm hoping that it's not a big snafu like a lot of things seem to be with this system as opposed to other ones I've used.
I have two lists; they are large and there is overlap between them.
I want to mail to the entire main list but excluding anyone who may also be on the second list.
I remember someone walking me through this years ago, and I can't remember how to do it.
Please help; searching the board brings up nothing.
