emailing customers who've paid

It would be great if we could email customers direct from and event that they have signed up under. This way we can quickly send out reminders and updates. Its extremely difficult to email customers one by one to let them know of changes.

This is already the standard function of emails within events. You can create and send emails specifically to an event's registrants, from within the event.
