once engagement list populates, you can't click on contact to see engagement #'s. Nor is it listed next to the email.

Which engagement are you looking at? For instance the contacts insight, a specific campaign's engagement, a segment you created based off of engagement? Does the engagement activity under contact details help fit your needs?
