Unique email addresses are what denote unique contacts for reporting, billing, etc. For the sake of anti-spam compliance, billing, and contact management, if a single person has multiple email addresses you're sending to, then they are considered separate, unique contacts.
As far as searching up contacts by their nicknames, that's entirely dependent on the data entered for the contact. "Mike" may be shorthand for "Michael," but it wouldn't be feasible to account for every potential nickname and shorthand version of names. Therefore, searches can only be for the parameters set- e.g. "Michael" or "Mike" explicitly being set for the first name field, or "Michael" for the first name and "Mike" as a custom field you create for nicknames.
At this time, your feature request wouldn't be possible, nor is it on the devs' current roadmap for contact management.
