Custom field won't display in a test email

Custom fields won't display in a test email. The only way custom fields display is when sending a final email to a list. How can I get the custom field to display in a test email?

You'd need for your own self contact to have custom field info, since test emails pull from the account owner's details in the Contacts tab. Even still test emails may default to the backup wording (if applicable) in tests no matter what.
